Two ways I used the Work Readiness skills at my internship in a positive way that could support my success is by always having a good attitude, and acting professional at all times. One day, a man called MAP and was very angry which was making me upset because he wanted someone that was not available but I remembered I had to stay calm because since I am at the front desk I represent the organization. I also thought that maybe the person was just having a bad bad so I tried to not let it get to me and keep a positive attitude. Being professional helped me succeed because your showing that they could trust you with some tasks which leaves a good impression to all the workers.
I have set many new goals for myself this upcoming school year. My biggest priority is getting my work done on time, and not leaving it until last minute. By doing this, I will be able to turn in my best work and not have it rushed. My goal is to make school my main priority because it is going to pay off, but in order to make this happen I need to take small steps. Everyday, when I come home from school the first thing I will do is start on my homework so that I don’t have to stay up at night working on it. Some bad habits I have are: not turning in my best work, working on homework at night when I am tired and turn in late work. Turning in my work has definitely improved over the past few months but I know that starting this year, everything will be turned in on time to the best of my ability.

I am very grateful for having the opportunity to take this career class because it help think more about my future and what I really want to do later on. It got me thinking about how much my parents have worked to be able to have enough money to live off of and how in the future I would soon have to know how save up money to afford everything I really need and if there is anything left maybe use it for something I want. I am grateful that I got the chance to start my internship and learn what it's like to take care of many children and not just two or three. Even though it has only been one day at my internship I am very grateful that I got the chance to start and I will continue to go there and learn a lot more.

I am grateful for my family and friends, without them I wouldn't have the motivation to become better. My internship was full of great new people and I'm grateful for meeting every single one of them. They all have a little story they want to share. I am grateful for the whole class experience, without it I wouldn't know anything about a cover letter, resume, and how to dress/act at a job. This program has helped me a lot and made me realize a lot. Thinking about the money we'd be earning and spending is very important and I wouldn't be thinking about it if it wasn't for this class. I am grateful for this class because it opened my eyes to the real world. I am grateful for my internship and the class because it benefitted me a lot. They both kept me active throughout the summer and I learned from both experiences.

I am grateful for my everyday for my family and friends, for waking up every day and learn new things, for being able to speak other languages and see things in another way. This summer I am grateful that I got a internship at the YMCA and was able to work with new people, learn about career pathways and have a productive summer. I class I was able to learn more about myself and to do resume, cover letter and many other things to help my future career. For my internship I was able to learn to be patient and be dedicated as I worked with kids. I learned that communication and dedication is very important skill to have in this type of work place. Overall, I am grateful that I had a productive summer with the help of Mr. Davison that I also grateful for finding me this amazing internship at the YMCA and for the Career Pathway Academy for teaching me professionalism and work skill for the future.

I am grateful for the people, both friends and family that I surround my self with, they are very supportive of my decisions, I am also grateful that I got to know the people at my internship. I am very lucky to have had the hands on experience of hat a job feels like because a lot of people don't get the chance because they don't know about it or are to lazy to do anything during the summer. I am grateful class taught me how to improve my resume and showed me what a cover letter was because I honestly had no clue what a cover letter was. I am also happy that I created A LinkedIn  profile because that also shows a future employer that I am serious and there aren't many teenagers with these profiles so I am ahead of the game. I have learned to be less shy because if you are more open than it shows you are more social and aren't afraid.

What did you learn about yourself? I learned that I am a very tolerant and patient person, because even though sometimes the children at the camp were just getting on my nerves I was calm and and tolerant of them. I am also somewhat organized and I can improve my self so one day  I can say I am very organized.

How did reflecting on what you learned (Discoveries) make you think differently about yourself? I am not perfect but I do have some qualities that add up and make me a good, reliable person as a friend and in the work field.

Consider lessons you were able to learn both technical or people skills. I learned how to use Blogger which I didn't know about before and also google slide which will be helpful in my future assignments. I learned that you have to be patient around children and that your employer likes it when you communicate with your customers or in my case the children.

I am very lucky for the opportunities I was given this summer because not many people get the chance to do something like this. This will be great for my resume and I gained knowledge being apart of the Internship and the Class. I am grateful for what life has given me.

There are so many things I am grateful for. I am grateful for my family, my friends and everything I have been given. This summer I am grateful for being accepted into this class, and being able to intern at the YMCA. In this class I am grateful for learning how to make a cover letter and a resume. At the YMCA I am grateful for the opportunity to work with children, which will help me with my long term goal. I leaned that I am very ambitious and diligent based on the value test. I am very grateful to learn about technical skills such as using blogger, linkedin, waybook, and google sites. I learned from the work readiness skills I am very tolerant and I work well with others. For example, I am tolerant at YKids because I deal with crying babies every day while maintaining a calm attitude. I work well with the employees, it almost feels like I have known them for years. These are a few things I am grateful for and a few things I learned.

I am full of gratitude for my learning experiences during class and in my internship. These two made my summer much more interesting and memorable.

Class
I am so thankful to have learned so much from Mr.Morales and to have learned so many skills. This class really helped me understand my values and character strengths. Each tuesday I learned something new. I enjoyed way book and writing discoveries after tests because i felt like way book really helped me express my thoughts out. Additionally now i know how to plan out my future. I learned about finance and expenses in my future. Building resumes, job applications and cover letters were really helpful as well. Linked in is also a source that i learned to value. Mr Morales along with Mrs. Horton have done a fantastic job! Mrs Horton providing us (me) with an internship and Mr.Morales helping us being work ready. For the future, I know what skills are needed and how goals should be planned out the S.M.A.R.T way.

Internship
Additionally, I am so blessed and thankful to have had the oppurtunity to have worked at Cake Art. Because of Cake Art i met  wonderful allies and friends. I learned basic skills that can be used for any job. I learned professionalism, organization skills and cleaning skills. I had a blast! Cake Art is only full of sweet and kind people.

Overall, I had an amazing experience. If it wouldn't have been for the above i would have spent my summer doing nothing productive and fun. I would have not learned about myself as i did in the internship class and i would have not been as ready as i am now. Hopefully next summer I'll be doing something as fun as this

All my thanks to  the members of Cake Art and the staff of Marin County Office of Education.

What am I grateful for

I am grateful for the friends and family that I have as well as the opportunities in life I was given. I am grateful for being able to know the people that are at my place of internship and for doing an internship. With this class I learned how to build a resume, a cover letter, and how to get noticed with the why, what, who, and at my internship I learned how to not get nervous meeting new people.
  • What did you learn about yourself?
    • Some things I learned about myself is that am more of a need that want person when it comes to finances and I learned that I am somewhat conventional, as well as learning that I am an agreeable person, that I am mostly open towards people but not always, I am not very organized in a way,  I enjoy attention,  and I rarely let my emotions get the better of me.
  • How did reflecting on what you learned (the Discoveries) make you think differently about yourself?
    • It reinforced the idea that I care about the well being of others than my own, and although I may not realize a quality, that it is still there and that I shouldn't try to change the way I am.
  • Consider lessons you were able to learn in both technical skill or people skills.
    • Technical examples: I leaned how to use Google Sites, collaborating using Blogger, and how to make a PDF.
    • People skills: I learned how to be more socially confident.
  • I consider myself very lucky to have chosen to do this so that I could get a jump on life during and after college doing an activity such as the internship as well as the Career Pathway Academy while other may not have the opportunity or the ability to do so.

This summer I was grateful for the chances to improve my skills in my internship and in class. I am grateful that in my internship class I was able to practice communicating with other whether they were employees or not. I am grateful that in my class I was able to learn new skills such as using google sites, sheets, how to use the blogger and how to learn to finance my money and save it for real needs.
Along the way I learned a few things about myself that I believe can help me on my path to my future career.
  •  I like to talk to people and though I like to keep to myself at times, I do enjoy talking with people, just that I enjoy the silence as well.
  •  I am calm in tense situations and that though I am reserved I enjoy occasional adventures and fun.
  • My values were ranked as  logic, diligence, ambition, relationships, competence, harmony, selflessness, beauty, creating, learning, justice, courage and leisure. My most highest ranking ones would be from logic to selflessness. This means that I focus on my tasks very productively and I know what is right or wrong in instances.
  • My top strengths were humor and playfulness as well as zest, enthusiasm and strength. The books I like are romance, some science fiction, fiction and classic literature as well as books that have information about various things. The classes I enjoy are the music related ones, physiology, physical education, and English. Me and my friends talk about movies, music and sometimes I geek out about a few superheroes and related things with my friends who share my same interests. I am  REALLY  curious about music, movies and literature.....I like to try and  memorize my favorite quotes.
  • I am good at: learning music and learning how to play an instrument and I am good at memorizing things and learning them.
  • 1. FULLY develop my musical skills
    2. Find myself in my dream career
    3. Make a difference
    4. Find my purpose in life
    5. Find my identity
    6. Complete a bucket list
    7. Become more confident
    8. Collect all my favorite books and a have a huge shelf to fill
    9. Start a journal
  • What makes me angry about the world is that it is still very prejudice and anti against certain people from races and they go on talking about justice and equality and how it is a very important part of societies foundation, but they go ahead and contradict themselves.
Another thing that makes me angry is that so many people litter and they don't worry about the ozone layer, global warming or about other precious lives besides humans.
The last thing about the world that makes me angry is that society is always going on about how everyone should be themselves and not pretend to be someone we are not for fear of being mocked. We see these messages through media, movies, ads and campaigns, but part of society does the opposite and tries to change who we are. Parents do this by not allowing to experiment throughout our teenage years and expect us to dress to the conformity of there past lives when they were teenagers and there is also communities and cities that do this. For example, if you are attracted to the other gender people gather into mobs to protest against them and the right to be with who they want. The very religious people blame certain "figures" to being responsible for their way of life.
  • I get a sense of purpose when I listen to music or when I am working on something that does not necessarily relate to school, but who I am.
I realized that being to scared to talk to people and saying the wrong thing has held me back from communicating freely with others and held me back from doing my best. The experience I gained from my internship and my class helped me to improve on communication. I knew communication would be one of the most important parts of working in my internship and in my future as well, so I decided to not let my fear get the best of me and work to better myself and for the service of customers who would need help.
I am grateful I joined an internship and took the class as well because before I had started I was not sure how to use google sheets, I did not not know what a blogger was or how to use google sites.

What am I grateful for Blog 5

I'm grateful for my parents for allowing me to participate as an intern for the Summer Camp. The experiences this summer that I'm grateful for is this Career Class and Internship. The Career Class helped me build more my resume and cover letter, before I didn't even know what a cover letter was and how to make one but know I understand how to create one. It helped improve my resume as well as teaching me what and what not to put, and how there are so many other types of ways to make one depending on the job you apply for. The internship helped me gain a new reference and a few new friends as well. One of those friends I found out, also has the same career goal as me, which is amazing because she could be my new ally in the future to come. Reflecting on the discoveries I made of my self, made me think of how I need to be more open with what I think and that I'm very dedicated when it comes to doing a job. Using Blogger, I realized that most of us have the same goals, to help, and make ourselves better.

Blog Post #3

After high school I definitely see college in my future. Do I know what college yet? No I don't because I don't really know what I want my career to be.

What really stands out to me is the field of psychology and what stands out even more is forensic psychology or criminal investigation. I like the whole mystery idea of these two. But I want to see more options or learn more about the different careers that are around me because I haven't really put thought into what other options could be for me.

I would like to take on more internships or any kind of volunteer work of different fields or different experiences so I can find out what is for me. I would also like to take any kind of psychology experience so I can get a feel of what it's like, preferably forensic psychology.

Right now I'm only open to staying in California. Hopefully soon I will get comfortable moving out of state or country.

Work Readiness Skills Blog 2

At my internship I use much of my dedication, I always complete the work I was assigned and I'm not afraid to ask my supervisor a question when I don't understand what they said. I keep positive because to the children I'm like a role model. I am also tolerant and respectful of others opinion on what to do and I use their ideas if needed. Like when it comes to one of the kids misbehaving, we all contribute to an idea on how to discipline the kid, we either take he/she out of the next two or one activities or we could have a long talk with them, and so on.

Future Plans

I believe that my future plans include going to college. Which college? Truthfully, I'm not sure yet.

I might want to live in New York (I have family there) or stay in California.

I would like to have more Medical experiences, because I would like to go into the Health Care Field. It would be great to get an internship or a job somewhere where I can get hands-on experience, or even behind-the-desk experience.

I would also like to meet people who inspire me and hopefully gain great mentors.

Blog #3 majors in college

When I go to college I want to major in biology, chemistry, and physics. To become a surgeon you need to major in biology, human physiology, health sciences, and chemistry. The average pay for a surgeon is 246,064 dollars after taxes. According to different geographic regions the pay of a surgeon is very different. For example if you are not a specialized surgeon in India you can make about 30,000 dollars a year, but if you a specialized surgeon some make 3,000,000 dollars a year. Personalities a surgeon should obtain are diligence and patience, to be able to correctly do surgery. Secondly, to become a pediatrician you need to major in nursing, health administration, and many other things. The average salary for a pediatrician is 173,00 dollars or for a specialized pediatrician they can make up to 394,000 dollars per year. People in New Zealand make a lot more or less than that, they make anywhere from 1,094 to 90,000 dollars a month. To be a pediatrician you need to be able to listen to your patients so you can find out what is wrong with them. Lastly, to become a physician you need to major in biology and healthcare. Physicians make about 173,089 dollars a year, after taxes. In some other places, such as Mexico, physicians only make about 25,000 dollars a year. Physicians need to have personalities that have confidence in the decisions they make, and that are compassionate towards the families.

 Work Readiness Skills

Dedication is my number one value in my opinion by being dedicate helps me like any job I am doing, like in my internship I am very dedicated to help my group of first grades, it helps be build a relationship with them and being able to understand them, helping  get their task done, and creating new games to help the other counselors in my group helped me build my courage and it gives me opportunity to experience of learning and exchanging new ideas.

Work readiness skills

I am professional at my place of internship by being there five minutes before we are officially opened to get ready.

I learned that the supervisor really liked that by the time I had set up I was already to start doing my jobs by the time we opened.

I am not too professional due to my nails not being one hundred percent clean and calluses all over my palms. I should probably take care of how my hands look.

Positive:

Honest- Honesty has helped me at my internship in many ways. When I first started my internship, my supervisor asked me about background in baking and working with kids. I was honest and told her that I had no experience in baking, but working with children I did. This helped me because as days went along I was learning how to use the equipment more than handling kids. As a result, now I have experience in both areas. Additionally, I am honest with the hours I do in the internship even If it means more or less hours.

Professional- Because I work with children, I am told to wear comfortable clothes in which i can move in. I cannot however wear flip flops and i must tie my hair. Ever since my supervisor told me this I have followed through. And I have realized how the choice in clothing can really effect the execution in your work.

Negative

Can communicate effectively- I feel like this area needs improvement because sometimes I'm to shy to ask the children if they need help. But I'll make sure to step out of my shyness and improve my communication skills because it will make me a better intern and a better future employee.

Positive:

-  Professional : I always show up ten to fifteen minutes earlier so if the counselors need help setting up or anything I am there to help them. I am working at the YMCA camp watching children and I can't be all fancy, I have to be comfortable in my clothes so I can be active with the little kids.

- Acts with Diligence : I came into the internship the second week and I didn't really know what was going on. I wasn't sure what the schedule was for the children and what was okay and what wasn't so I asked my counselors questions to clarify and that I didn't understand.

Negative:

- On the first day I wasn't really talkative with the children and I knew I had to improve that so when I went back on Wednesday for my second day I started talking to more of the children so they won't just think of me of some girl who only shows up and is just there. I have to be more open and I am getting better at that but there is still room for improvement

Blog #2 Work Readiness Skills

Positive:

Acts with diligence - Acting with diligence has definitely helped me in my internship in the first weeks. I came in not knowing much about what the routine was for the kids and often times I had to ask clarifying questions as to what to do and stuff like that. This helped me to get to know the kids and the other teachers. I made sure that I was doing what I was supposed to be doing and did it correctly. On the first day I asked questions about what we are doing next and how to handle situations which was necessary.

Can Communicate Effectively - In my internship I definitely made sure that I was communicating to the very best of my ability with the other teachers and the children. It is vital to be able to communicate what everyone wants to do in a situation with the other teachers. When I was wondering how to put away the chairs after snack time, one of the teachers helped me put them away and kind of over-viewed what it should all look like, which helped me a lot.

Needs Improvement:

Professional - Some things that are holding me back a bit is being on time when going to my internship. It is more informal than a job or something so it isn't really a problem, but I think I need to start being on time everyday.

One example of how I use a work skill in my internship in a positive way is being professional. I come to my internship 20 minutes earlier dressed appropriately keeping in mind that my internship is with young children and that I look presentable enough. Being on time has not been a problem in my internship so far and it is a positive outlook of me on my internship.

Another example of how I use a work skill in my internship in a positive way is serving other peoples needs when they come in with questions. If a customer needs to find a book or has a question I listen and try to help them the best I can even if I am not sure I can. I have grown in this area since I have been going around and asking if they may need help without thinking if I should or not.
I have learned not to think to much about doing something when it comes to helping someone in my internship and it helps.

Blog # 2 work readiness skills

I use many of the work readiness skills in my internship at the YMCA. One work readiness skill I use in my internship is to be tolerant. For example, when a baby is crying extremely loud, I have to be tolerant of her behavior. I learned that not everyone is going to do what you expect or want them to do. Another work readiness skill that I use is professionalism. For example I cannot wear a fancy dress or high heels to  watch children at the YMCA. I have to wear something comfortable, and that I can be active in, but I definitely can't look like I just got out of bed. I learned that you cannot dress any way you want at work. Lastly, I had to work harder with the work readiness skill of serving the needs of others. For example, I had to work harder to try to figure out what the babies needed or wanted so they would stop crying. These are just a few examples of how these skills are used during my internship.
If I do end up going into psychology I would like to become a forensic psychologists. I'm not picky about what area I would work in, but I would like it to be somewhere in California.
If I end up going into business I would like to enter into accountings. I'm also not picky about the area I would be working in but I also would like it to be in California.
I have had a difficult time deciding what I should major in. Some people bring up my career and what I want to become and I don't respond with a satisfied response. I have been thinking about majoring in psychology or in business. Both are really interesting to me but I don't know which best suits me. I would like to have met this goal during junior year or before I graduate from high school

Must Complete

I want to pass all my A-G requirements with a high grade point average (take AP/honor classes), be able to get scholarships, and have good time management
Must Complete
Attend a good university where they offer what I would like to study, which is the psychology. I would like to get my own private practice, and also seek new things where I can help others.

  Fernanda Burciaga

My short term goals are to research more into colleges that I am interested in and the careers that I would most enjoy. Another short term goal would be to join in on more school or after school activities that would help me get into college.
My long term goals are to improve my studying skills for exams and finals and to prepare myself for college courses. I also want to improve my writing skills and write my thoughts out clearly in my essays.

My short term habits that help me are doing my work without being told and improving my reading skills by reading for my own enjoyment.
My long term habits that I would like to work on and improve are studying on my own and asking for help on my hardest classes.

My short term allies are my friends that I share classes in school with and help me when I have a problem on classwork or homework.
My long term allies are my teachers in professors from my classes and the ones I will have in the future, my parents, classmates and my friends as well as the notes that we have for that class and also my skills that will help me in the long run.
My  goals are to try new things, I don't want anything to hold me back . If there  opportunities that will help me become a stronger person and help me with my future I want to take them. If the classes are still offered this year in the College of Marin I want to take a Psychology course. I have always been interested in this topic and if I want to do this in the future I want to make sure it is some thing I actually like doing. I think it will be what I want to do, and if I keep up with my goal of being a certified psychologist it will  take me about 8 years.

My habits are that when i'm doing my work I stay focused completely on my work and what I am supposed to be doing. I make sure that, whatever I am doing is my main  priority. I tend to be late to where I'm supposed to be but during the summer I have improved that and I want to keep that up.

My allies are my parents, my close friends and my boss.
